Qualifying for OHIP.

If you are living in Ontario, having health coverage through the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) is essential. However, not everyone is eligible right away, and different immigration statuses come with different requirements. Here’s a simple guide to help you understand who qualifies and what to expect.
Permanent Residents
Individuals who have been granted Permanent Resident (PR) status in Canada are generally eligible for OHIP. To qualify, you must also:
Make Ontario your primary residence, and
Be physically present in Ontario for at least 153 days in your first 183 days here.
Important: Some provinces used to have a three-month waiting period for new residents, but Ontario has removed this waiting period for most newcomers.
Newcomers Waiting for PR
If you are in Canada but have not yet received your permanent resident status, you may not be eligible for OHIP yet. However, there are exceptions depending on your status and permits.
During this time, many newcomers use:
Private health insurance, or
Coverage through school or employer plans.
Temporary Residents
Some temporary residents can qualify for OHIP, depending on the type and length of their permit.

How to Apply for OHIP
To apply, visit ServiceOntario with:
Proof of identity,
Proof of immigration status, and
Proof of Ontario residency (such as a lease, utility bill, or bank statement).
If approved, your Ontario health card will be mailed to you.
Eligibility for OHIP depends heavily on your immigration status and how long you intend to stay in Ontario. If you are unsure whether you qualify, or are transitioning from temporary status to permanent residency, consider speaking with an immigration consultant or settlement worker for personalized guidance.
